Rain played a spoiler for India once again on the ongoing New Zealand tour. This time, it was the second ODI at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Sunday that had to be abandoned after 12.5 overs.
The third and final ODI will be played in Christchurch on Wednesday.
Overcast skies had delayed the toss by 15 minutes before the first interruption occurred when India were 22 without loss in 4.5 overs after being put in to bat.It took almost four hours for play to resume, with the game then reduced to 29-overs-a-side.
Captain Shikhar Dhawan departed soon after the resumption, but his opening partner Shubman Gill (45 not out) and Suryakumar Yadav (34 not out) scored briskly to take India’s scoring rate closer to seven an over.
Gill has been a consistent performer since his return to the Indian team during the West Indies ODIs in July.Suryakumar too is looking steady and solid.
Suryakumar, promoted to No.3 on this occasion, unleashed some of his trademark strokes to score at a strike rate of 136.Together, Gill and he smashed 66 off 46 balls before inclement weather again forced the players off the ground and eventually led to a no result.
Brief scores: India 89/1 in 12.5 overs (S.Gill 45 n.o., S.Yadav 34 n.o.) vs New Zealand.No result.
