Kolkata Knight Riders believe captain Shreyas Iyer’s comment that CEO Venky Mysore is “also involved in team selection”, following the Mumbai Indians game on Monday, has been “misinterpreted”.
“Shreyas’ comment was meant to be on a positive note. He was asked after the match how difficult it was to tell the players of their omission from the XI given the numerous changes in the squad. He was speaking off the cuff and it was never intended to create a controversy. Nothing should be read between the lines,” said a source close to KKR.
Mysore joins Shreyas and head coach Brendon McCullum on rare occasions at selection meetings, and that too only when requested to do so, the sources said.
“Venky doesn’t get involved in selection matters. He leaves it entirely to the team management. At times, his views are sought but it is up to the coach and captain to accept or reject it,” the source maintained.
It was learnt that the captain himself is “very upset” that the comment created such a storm and may clarify sometime later.
